The handle features a finely carved female figure, an interpretation of Marakihau. In many pūrākau, Marakihau are described as beings of the sea, with half human forms and elongated, tubular tongues.

Carved from Mataī, the figure holds a natural warmth, her surface brought to a smooth, refined finish. The shaft in Kwila provides weight and durability, grounding the work, while pāua inlays introduce subtle shifts of light.
