A philosophical visual allegory where light, shadow, and illusion trade places, Plato's Cave Revisited offers a reinterpretation of the classic allegory, transformed into a sophisticated shadow theater. In this piece, we wanted to explore the thin line between reality and perception, observer and observed. By suspending a hand-painted figure on acrylic glass within a minimalist steel frame, we have allowed the chained prisoner—historically forced to watch a theater of shadows—to himself become the source of the shadow theater. The society of the spectacle effectively becomes the society of the self-spectacle.
We designed this unique sculpture to be an interactive experience of light and depth. The internal element is hand-painted on clear acrylic and woven into the steel structure with a fine thread that intersects with the painted lines, allowing two dimensions to seamlessly merge into a three-dimensional physical web. When illuminated by a spotlight or the natural sun, the painted form and its cast shadow interact dynamically. The clear acrylic allows light to pass through the pigment, creating a soft, ethereal projection that evolves as the light source shifts. For the full experience, placing this sculpture near a dedicated directional light source allows it to project the figure's illusions onto the wall behind it, serving as a powerful focal point that creates a three-dimensional geometric composition on the wall.
The craftsmanship behind the piece highlights our rigorous manual process. We individually paint with an airbrush each central pane image, searching for a sense of weightless depth from the chance encounters that occur when indian ink meets high-grade clear acrylic glass. The frame, measuring 16 cm in width, 16 cm in height, and 13 cm in depth, is crafted from steel bars that we welded directly in our Granada studio. This artisanal steel welding provides an industrial, minimalist architectural contrast to the delicate painting within.
This piece belongs to a limited series of only 12 sculptures, and this specific acquisition represents number 2 of the 12 available worldwide. Reflecting its status as an exclusive d'auteur work for serious art collectors and conceptual art enthusiasts, a signed artist certificate of authenticity is included with the artwork.
