Salicylic acid is a beta hydroxy acid found naturally in plants. It contains anti-inflammatory properties and promotes exfoliation, making it an effective topical antibacterial agent. This substance is odourless and ranges from white to light tan. Sinks and blends well in warm water. Salicylic acid is a monohydroxybenzoic acid, meaning it is benzoic acid with a hydroxy group at the ortho position. It's derived from the bark of white willow and wintergreen leaves. This compound serves as an antibacterial, antifungal, keratolytic, EC 1.1.1.11 (L-ascorbate peroxidase) inhibitor, plant metabolite, algal metabolite, and hormone. Also known as a conjugate acid of salicylate.
