INCI: N-Acetyl Glucosamine.
Purity: 99.5%.
Molecular weight: 221.21.
N-acetyl glucosamine is a "skin identical ingredient" found in our skin's cell spaces. It helps maintain skin's barrier and prevent dryness. NAG promotes collagen synthesis and moisture retention in skin.
NAG has been linked to reduced hyperpigmentation. This amino sugar exfoliates the skin similarly to alpha and beta hydroxy acids, but without causing irritation. NAG can normalize stratum corneum exfoliation, making it a suitable alternative to acid-based exfoliants that may cause irritation in sensitive or rosacea-prone skin.
It is a precursor of hyaluronic acid, a key component in skin structure. Hyaluronic acid promotes hydration, while n-acetylglucosamine has been linked to increased moisture levels. Combining NAG with niacinamide enhances its potential to diminish hyperpigmentation. A study found that combining 2% niacinamide and 4% NAG considerably reduced hyperpigmentation in age spots and uneven skin pigmentation. An eight-week double-blind trial found that NAG alone reduced face hyperpigmentation. NAG inhibits the glycosylation of pro-tyrosinase, reducing melanin in the skin.
