Exploring the fragile boundaries of human communication, The Dictionary of Words that are Impossible to Focus (Diccionario de palabras imposibles de enfocar) is a two-piece conceptual sculpture that dives into the complex limits of language. Created in 2021, this artwork addresses a recurring theme, the frontier between sense and nonsense, the idea that translation, no matter how precise, often leaves the truest essence of a word slightly blurred, obscured, and ultimately ineffable. The work is split into two interconnected physical components: an intricate, interactive archive of global vocabulary and a rudimentary, handmade microscope designed to physically manifest the intellectual strain of understanding another culture.
The first part of the sculpture is a meticulously constructed dictionary containing just under one hundred words selected from an array of languages, including Japanese, English, German, and Arabic. Each word chosen possesses a distinct cultural singularity—concepts like the Arabic Gurfa, which describes the exact amount of water that can be held in one's cupped hands, or the Japanese Komorebi, which captures the specific beauty of sunlight filtering through the leaves of trees. We have displayed these words alongside their Spanish translations, framing them individually on delicate glass microscope slides. While these terms can be translated on a surface level, they require a deeper layer of cultural awareness, context, and lived situation to truly grasp their emotional weight and nuance.
The accompanying piece of the sculpture is a custom-engineered, rudimentary microscope featuring a single word on a slide magnified under a glass lens. To reinforce the concept of linguistic friction, we purposefully built this microscope without any mechanical focusing knobs or adjustments. Instead, the mechanism requires the viewers themselves to move, lean, and physically position their own bodies until the magnified word finally snaps into sharp focus. This physical interaction serves as a direct metaphor for the effort required to bridge cultural divides; you cannot simply look at the word passively, you must actively adjust your perspective to truly see it.
The craftsmanship of the dictionary itself highlights a highly technical, manual process, hand-wrought from a combination of industrial steel, clear glass, and acrylic sheets. We designed the structural frame with removable panels secured by integrated magnets, allowing the viewer to slide open the compartments to inspect, handle, and rearrange the vocabulary slides at will. This interactive element transforms the dictionary from a static monument into an evolving, tactile archive. As a completely unique, museum-quality original that seamlessly fuses linguistics with industrial craftsmanship, the sculpture is hand-signed by us and stands as a foundational statement piece for collectors of deeply philosophical contemporary art.
